HYOO-man-in
A mitochondrial-encoded peptide that protects cells from stress and death — one of the most exciting longevity research molecules.
Also known as: HN, Humanin Peptide
Last reviewed: April 2026
Humanin is a 24-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. It protects cells from apoptosis (programmed death), reduces inflammation, and improves insulin sensitivity. Blood levels of humanin decline with age and correlate with healthspan. It's one of the 'mitochondrial-derived peptides' (MDPs) — signals your mitochondria send to protect the cell.

All three are mitochondrial-related peptides. MOTS-c mimics exercise. SS-31 stabilizes mitochondrial membranes. Humanin protects cells from death. Complementary longevity mechanisms.
MOTS-c
A peptide encoded by your mitochondrial DNA that acts as an exercise mimetic — activating the same pathways as a workout.
SS-31 (Elamipretide)
A mitochondria-targeted peptide that concentrates inside your cells' power plants to restore their function.
