Evidence Summary
How It Works
Glutathione is a tripeptide (glutamate-cysteine-glycine) synthesized in every cell, with the highest concentrations in the liver. It directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species, regenerates vitamins C and E, and serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes involved in phase II detoxification. Depletion of glutathione is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, liver disease, and accelerated aging, making repletion a target for broad-spectrum health optimization.
Common Applications
Safety & Considerations
IV and nebulized glutathione are generally well tolerated. Mild side effects include bloating, cramping, and rare allergic reactions. Inhaled glutathione may exacerbate bronchospasm in asthmatics. Long-term high-dose use has not been extensively studied. Oral bioavailability is limited; liposomal or IV routes are preferred for therapeutic dosing.
